Bob Dylan Guitar Chords - Why Learn Them?

Many guitar players are still learning the chords to the songs of Bob Dylan. Tab arrangements of his songs are being downloaded from the internet by people whose daddies did not even have glints in their eyes when the songs were written.

Bob Dylan is one of the big time songwriters of the universe, carried a guitar around all the time, always played guitar on stage but does he qualify as a guitar hero? Bob Dylan composed his songs on the guitar and anybody who has seen "No Direction Home", Martin Scorsese's documentary on Dylan, knows that he lives and breathes music. But he is essentially a rhythm guitarist - a guy who sings and plays the guitar. Can we learn anything about guitar playing from him? Maybe he doesn't "do" much but it seems hard to believe we cannot benefit from watching a guy who expressed himself on the guitar without even thinking. It's part of his language.

Take "Knockin' On Heaven's Door", a song written for a movie nobody cares about any more. The movie has vanished from our hearts and minds but the song has stayed. Just like "All Along The Watchtower", a song expressing the confusion an individual feels in a complex and hostile world. This song has lived in our consciousness for many years, too, but probably because of the definitive version made by Jimi Hendrix.

Bob Dylan's music was born in the era of the protest song. The sixties was full of young people protesting about the injustices of society. The war going on in Vietnam was the catalyst but people had been unhappy with straitlaced American and European society for many years. The main gripe in the protest movement was personal freedom. White people griped about how black people were not free. They complained about being sent to a war that was unjust. They were not happy with the homemaker's role that was forced upon women. They felt generally stifled by society.

Bob Dylan's song "Blowin' In The Wind" is the definitive protest song of the nineteen sixties. It is a list of the ills of mankind with a suggestion that the solution is an ongoing matter for anybody who cares. Rolling Stone magazine made a list of the 500 greatest songs of all time and "Blowin' In The Wind" came in at number 14. Forty years after it was first released. That song carries a whole lot of power.

Of course Bob Dylan wrote many other songs that became icons in their own way. "Just Like A Woman" was supposed to be about Dylan's affection for either Joan Baez or a New York socialite who moved in the Andy Warhol circle. A song about a woman, but this too is on Rolling Stone's list of all time greats.

"Blowin' in the Wind" was recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary, a folk trio who could mesmerize huge crowds of music lovers at their concerts. Three hundred thousand copies of the song were sold in the first seven days after it was released. Many people have said that Bob Dylan might not have sold records in those numbers relying on his own singing. I still think we lose out if we do not get to know his songs and his guitar playing.

Why Did Roy Orbison Wear Sunglasses?

Born in Texas, Roy Orbison was an American singer-songwriter and musician.

Orbison's career started in a rockabilly / country & western band in high school when he was signed by Sun Records in Memphis. His greatest success was with Monument Records in the early 1960s. 22 of his songs reached the Top Forty, including "Only the Lonely", "Crying", "In Dreams", and "Oh, Pretty Woman". His career faltered through the 1970s, but several covers of his songs ("Dream Baby" by Glen Campbell, "Crying" by Don McLean, "Blue Bayou" by Linda Ronstadt, to name a few) and the use of one in a film by David Lynch revived his career in the 1980s. He became a member of the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne and released an album in 1988. Unfortunately, Orbison died of a heart attack at the young age of 52.

Two things made Orbison particularly memorable; the first was the quality of his voice. He was a natural baritone with a spectacular range. He used his powerful, distinctive voice to great effect - and his use of falsetto was masterful. Many people speculated that he could cover 4 octaves.

The second thing which created an air of mystery about Orbison was the "shades" which he wore. It turns out that they were prescription sunglasses because, like other siblings, the Orbison family had a history of eye problems. But Orbison began wearing the shades because he turned up to a gig and, realizing that his specs were still on the plane, only had the prescription Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses with him. From then on, the sunglasses were part of the Orbison style which he developed himself.

Orbison was loved by many of the world's most famous pop and rock stars including the Beatles and Bob Dylan.

Margaret MacGillivray heard Roy Orbison first when she was a teenager in the 60s. Even now, the sound of Orbison's voice brings back happy memories of growing up in Scotland. MacGillivray runs a Scottish Gifts shop in Helensburgh, Argyll and Revive Fashion.

Review of the Electric Light Orchestra CD Elo II

The exceptionally talented Rock group Electric Light Orchestra have released their CD entitled Elo II. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Electric Light Orchestra fans, and Rock fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of Elo II their artistic excellence is on full display as they have once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be their best work to date.

This one will grab your attention right from the beginning with In Old England Town and won’t let go until the very last note of the very last song Roll Over Beethoven, which by the way is another great track.

One of the nicer things about a CD like this is when the talent is this rich even if Rock isn’t your favorite style you still can’t help but appreciate the greatness of the musicians.

I’m of the opinion that Elo II is certainly some of this groups best work in a few years. A totally enjoyable CD and an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up because it’s a collection that even the casual Rock fan can appreciate and enjoy.

While the entire album is outstanding the truly standout tunes are track 4 - From The Sun To The World, track 6 - In Old England Town, and track 9 - Roll Over Beethoven.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 - In Old England Town. Great track!

Rolling Stones' lead guitarist Keith Richards was famous for being a rebel and bad boy during his heyday in the 60's and 70's. The fact remains, however, that he was and is a talented musician who contributed greatly to the rock and roll sound. If you are a fan of Keith or of the Rolling Stones, you may have a dream of learning to play guitar like him. He was creative, innovative, and part of one of the most influential groups in the history of popular music. The story of Keith Richards has a lot to teach an aspiring musician who wishes to follow in his footsteps. Here are some things you should do if you want to learn to play like Keith.

Do not limit yourself to only one style of music. As a boy, Keith Richards listened to a variety of musical works. His mother was a music lover and the daughter of a big-band musician. She exposed young Keith to the jazz sounds of Billie Holliday and Louis Armstrong, among others. She also acquired a place for him as a singer in a famous British children's' choir. So, if your desire is to play like Keith Richards, don't neglect the acoustic guitar.

Don't be afraid to take professional risks. Keith Richards was a member of the Rolling Stones for decades, but he was not afraid to branch out and work on some other projects, as well. He participated on albums with stars like Norah Jones and Aretha Franklin, and stretched and grew as a musician as a result. He also made the daring move of acting in a feature film in 2007. At a time when he could have been resting on his laurels, he was willing to answer the call of his friend Johnny Depp, and play the role of Jack Sparrow's father in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. It was a gutsy move for Richards, and could have led to criticism and ridicule, but he was willing to take the chance. Most accounts have praised his work in the film, and Keith's attitude has likely opened up more career opportunities for him in the future. Anyone who has tried to play lead guitar in the style of Carlos Santana will know how difficult it is to duplicate. I am not referring to copying a Santana solo from a TAB sheet, we're talking about understanding how Carlos creates his powerful solos.

Santana's powerful solos are a blend of interesting harmonic textures mixed with traditional earthy scales. Of course, there's a lot more to Carlos Santana's music than scales and chords, Carlos is a very definite guitarist, every note he plays is packed with energy and emotion.

Guitarist's trying to learn Santana's guitar solos often encounter notes and chords outside the standard guitar resource material of minor pentatonic scale plus power chord combination.

Here's 5 tips to help guitarist's grasp the concepts behind Santana's music.

1. Learn the Harmonic Minor scale .

Guitarist's who already know the natural minor scale can easily create the Harmonic minor scale by sharpening the seventh note of the natural minor scale.

Let's use the "A" natural minor scale as an example.

The notes in the "A" natural minor are as follows: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A.

By sharpening the G we create the "A" harmonic minor scale: A, B, C, D, E, F, G#, A.

The natural minor scale is also known as the Aeolian mode.

2. Study chords produced from the Harmonic minor scale.

As the name implies the Harmonic minor scale produces as interesting family of rich sounding chords.

The following chords are created from the "A" harmonic minor scale.

chord 1 = A minor (#7), chord 2 = B minor 7th flat 5, chord 3 = C major 7th sharp 5, chord 4 = D minor 7th, chord 5 = E dominant 7th, chord 6 = F major 7th, chord 7 = G sharp diminished 7th.

The "A" minor (#7) chord is also known as a minor/major seventh chord e.g., Am (MAJ7).

The B minor 7th flat 5 chord is also known as a B half diminished chord.

3. Play the standard Harmonic minor chord progressions.

The most common chord progressions are the 2-5-1, 1-4-5, 1-6-2-5, 1-6-4-5 and 1-6-5 progressions.

The following examples are given in the key of A harmonic minor, notice how the preference is for a straight minor chord for chord one instead of a minor sharpened seventh.

2-5-1 = B minor seventh flat 5, E dominant seventh, A minor./ 1-4-5 = A minor, D minor seventh, E dominant seventh. /1-6-2-5 = A minor, F major seventh, B minor seventh flat 5, E dominant
seventh. / 1-6-4-5 = A minor, F major seventh, D minor seventh,E dominant seventh. / 1-6-5 = A minor, F major seventh, E dominant seventh.

4. Blues scale played over Harmonic minor chord progressions:

Obviously the harmonic minor scale will work well over the chord progressions created from that scale. Santana often plays the blues scale over the harmonic minor chord progressions.

Here is an example, the "A" blues scale consisting of the notes A,C,D,Eb,E,G can be played over a B minor seventh flat 5, E dominant seventh and A minor chords progression.

5. Let to play the Dorian Mode:

A number of popular Santana tunes are based on the Dorian mode. The song "Evil Ways" is in "G" Dorian the notes for G Dorian are: G,A,Bb,C,D,E,F,G. Whilst the tune "Black Magic Woman" is derived
from the "D" Dorian mode: D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D.

Learning new scales and chords can be very interesting, it is vitally important to be able to "hear" these new sounds, record the chord progressions and pay close attention to how each chord sounds so you can recognize them when you hear them new time.

Lynn Carey Saylor Has Brian May of Queen As a Very Good Friend

American singer-songwriter and musician Lynn Carey Saylor can count Brian May, the legendary lead guitarist from QUEEN, among her celebrity friends, and Brian thinks so much of Lynn and her songwriting ability that he offered to play on two recording sessions when she was laying down tracks that would appear on her debut album You Like It Clean.

The first of these songs was Lynn's self-penned If We Believe, which was originally released as a limited edition charity single back in 2002. Brian not only played electric guitar in his amazing distinctive style on this number but he also sang some backing vocals on it as well.

Lynn donated money that came in for If We Believe to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, an AIDS charity set up after the death of Freddie Mercury, who was killed by the terrible disease.

Lynn's song won the IOMA 2005 award for Best Collaboration, Best Song and Best Cover Art, and, in addition, she was voted the Best Female Vocalist. If there had been an award for Most Beautiful Female Artist she would probably have got that too because Lynn is absolutely stunning.

The 1984 Pat Benatar hit We Belong was the second song on which Brian May played lead guitar. It was originally written by Eric Lowen and Dan Navarro, and the two songwriters actually appear in the video of Lynn's recording session, which was produced by Lynn's husband, Skip Saylor, at the Skip Saylor Recording Studios in Los Angeles.

This year has been a very busy one for Lynn, who was recently on a short visit to the UK. While she was there she was a special guest on Sue Marchant's BBC radio show.

The interview can be heard on Lynn Carey Saylor's street team site at Myspace. And it is on Myspace that Lynn has been building her huge fanbase and also attracted the attention of Dean Markley Strings and SPG Guitars with both companies deciding to endorse her music.

With all this going for her it surely can't be long before Lynn becomes recognised on the world stage for the incredibly talented star that she is.

Stairway To Heaven - The Story Behind the Song

Stairway to Heaven was the song that everyone wanted to learn when I first started playing the guitar. It was the one song that could define you as a good guitarist among your peers.

Stairway to Heaven was written by Robert Plant and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. They began recording in 1970 and the project was slowly brought to completion one year later in 1971 (after the lyrics were added.) Here are some interesting facts about Stairway to Heaven...

* It was performed by Led Zeppelin for the very first time in conjunction with the first concert they gave in Northern Ireland at Belfast's Ulster Hall.
* It is cited as the most played song on FM radio stations in the United States, despite never being released as a single there.
* Stairway to Heaven is one of the most well-known popular songs in rock and roll history, despite the fact that it was never released as a single.
* It is the biggest-selling single piece of sheet music clocking up an average of 15,000 copies yearly.
* It is considered by many to be one of the greatest rock and roll songs of all time.
* The opening chord progression in Stairway to Heaven is nearly identical to the 1968 instrumental "Taurus" by the group Spirit.

Some critics have accused Led Zeppelin of recording a hidden Satanic message in Stairway To Heaven that can be heard when it's played backward. The band has ignored such claims for the most part. Singer/composer Robert Plant replied to a question on this subject by saying:

"To me it's very sad, because 'Stairway To Heaven' was written with every best intention, and as far as reversing tapes and putting messages on the end, that's not my idea of making music."

Swan Song Records also issued the statement at the time which said:

"Our turntables only play in one direction—forwards".

I personally don't believe there is anything sinister at all about the song Stairway to Heaven . The words are really quite thought provoking. It begins with words about living a life that is only satisfied with material things...

"There's a lady is sure,
all that glitters is gold,
and she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows,
if the stores are all closed,
with a word she can get what she came for."

As the song progresses it becomes more reflective and even somewhat spiritual...

"Your head is hummin' and it won't go, in case you don't know,
the piper's calling you to join him.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run,
there's still time to change the road you're on."

I guess everyone must decide for themselves how they feel about this song. As a guitar teacher, I definitley think it's worth learning because it is a true rock and roll classic.

If you're just beginning to learn guitar, you might find Stairway to Heaven a bit of a challenge to play, but it's not impossible. Those of you who have been playing for awhile shouldn't have any problem. Of course, if your in a band, then this song is a must to know as it is a great crowd pleaser. You will definitely gain recognition and a good response if you can play it well.

The Origins and Scope of the Rolling Stones' Music

The Rolling Stones were like many other British acts of the 1960s as they were heavily influenced by American rock 'n' roll and R&B. They were at the leading edge of the so-called British Invasion of the mid-1960s, as the Stones and contemporaries such as the Beatles, the Dave Clark Five, Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Kinks, the Animals, the Yardbirds, the Who, Herman's Hermits and the Hollies all made at least a significant showing on the charts, both in America and at home in Britain. Out of all of those groups, the Beatles, in spite of breaking up in 1970, became and still remain the most successful act in music history in terms of sales and influence. The Rolling Stones became a constant presence that is still active today. In addition to their longevity, the Stones have had significant success on the charts in America, Britain, and around the world. There is little doubt that any act since the Beatles fails to meet the Beatles' standards, however there are few acts that meet the standards of the Stones either. For the most part, comparing the Beatles to the Stones is like comparing apples to oranges as they have different styles, with the Beatles being more influenced by early rock 'n' roll while the Stones were not only influenced by early rock 'n' roll but also by American Blues.

As noted above, the Stones and their British contemporaries were indeed influenced by early American rock 'n' roll artists such as Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly the Everly Brothers and Jerry Lee Lewis, and therefore had a foundation deeply rooted in rock 'n' roll. Once again, what made the Stones stand out from the Beatles and all of their other contemporaries, save for maybe the Yardbirds, was the fact that they were also heavily influenced by American Blues and R&B artists such as Muddy Waters, Rev. Gary Davis, Bo Diddley, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin' Wolf and Arthur Alexander. A significant majority of the Stones' recordings from their first three years (1963-1965) showcased both their rock 'n' roll influences and their blues influences. As a matter of fact a great deal of their recordings from this period would be cover songs of the American Blues and R&B artists mentioned above.

As the years went on however, the Stones added and incorporated more genres into their blues and rock 'n' roll foundation such as country, folk, baroque pop, psychedelia, adult contemporary, reggae, dub, new wave, punk and disco too name a few. It is this characteristic of the band which has made them very successful over the years as their ability to incorporate these other genres into their repertoire has enabled them to build upon their original foundation and consequently build an enormously successful career. Artists that influenced the Stones to incorporate news genres into their sound include George Jones, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, The Flying Burrito Brothers and Otis Redding. Hits and popular songs over the years such as "Ruby Tuesday," "Angie," "Wild Horses," 'Tumbling Dice," "Miss You," "Paint It Black," "Sympathy For The Devil," "Start Me Up" and "Honky Tonk Women" are all indicative of their musical diversity. "Ruby Tuesday" is baroque pop; "Angie" is a 70s-style adult contemporary ballad; "Miss You" is a disco-rock fusion; "Wild Horses" and "Honky Tonk Women" have a strong country influence; "Tumbling Dice" is inflicted with gospel and soul; "Paint It Black" is eastern-tinged psychedelia; "Sympathy For The Devil" has a tribal meets rock 'n' roll sound, while "Start Me Up," although sounding like a straight-forward rocker, is in fact a reggae based track. Even their biggest hit, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," is an example of the Stones building upon their foundation as it features a much harder edge than their early cover songs.

The sound of the Stones would help lay the groundwork for a diverse array of rock artists which followed them such as Aerosmith, Guns N' Roses, The Doors, The Stooges, Thin Lizzy, Oasis, Blur, The Stone Roses, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, T. Rex, The Ramones, AC/DC, Creedence Clearwater Revival, New York Dolls, Def Leppard, Foreigner, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Steve Earle, Neil Young, Elton John, The Sex Pistols, Bon Jovi and Pearl Jam--And that is just the first generation. One must consider the number of artists that the Stones-influenced artists have influenced themselves. The only thing that is as long-lasting as the Rolling Stones themselves is without a doubt the legacy they have left and will continue to leave even after the band calls it a day. When that day comes, it will be long after most of their British Invasion contemporaries have hung it up, most of them retiring back in the '60s and '70s. As rock music has changed, and even faltered over the years, the Rolling Stones remain one of the few constants as an excellent source of entertainment.

Brian Jones, Founder of the Rolling Stones

Last year the music community and fans marked the 25th
anniversary of John Lennon's death. Predictably, quite a few new
Beatles books have hit the stores just in time for the holidays.
Few bands have managed to carve out such a coveted place in rock n'
roll history, which leads to the age old question: The Beatles or
The Rolling Stones. It's a debate that has raged on since the early
60s, with devoted fans of each voicing their steadfast opinions.
Others stand firmly in the middle, believing it's simply a matter
of taste. Both artists contributed much to the history of recorded
music. More than 40 years after their formation, The Rolling Stones
still tour the world, though some argue they are a pale shadow of
the once vibrant band they were in the early 60s. Ultimately, they
are still selling out shows and fans are still enjoying them.

Most Stones fans cite the prolific material of the 1970s as the
group's best work and few can downplay the importance of EXILE ON
MAIN STREET and LET IT BLEED. But, the term 'best' is open to
interpretation. Surely, it had a strong impact on bands to follow
but the same can be said of the Stones early material, represented
by such classic albums like 1966's AFTERMATH and 1968's BEGGARS
BANQUET . The early live shows and recordings set new boundaries by
tying classic blues and R&B together with raw rock n' roll. The
blues foundation, which carried over into the Stones 70s material,
was rooted in the band's original guitarist and founder, Brian
Jones. The "forgotten Stone" is known to few newer Stones fans.
Still, Brian's enigmatic persona and unique style mirrors Lennon's
in the Beatles. Accounts claim Lennon was, in fact, closer to Brian
than any of the other Stones. The two were inseparable during the
infamous Rock N' Roll Circus debacle of 1968 and there were even
rumors they discussed the possibility of a musical collaboration
prior to Brian's untimely death in 1969. Our imaginations could
only envision how it would have turned out. Sadly, too few remember
Brian and the often understated impact he had on one of the most
quintessential rock n' roll bands of all time.

I've read nearly every book on the life of Brian Jones and visited
his grave in the English countryside a few years back. Most books
say the same thing: they talk about Brian's early life and
childhood; his meeting with Mick and Keith, which led to the
formation of the Stones; his subsequent downfall due to lack of
self-esteem and drug use, and his untimely death ruled a suicide
but still believed by many to be murder. Lost in all of these books
is the true insight into Brian as a person. There is mention of
both his many character flaws, which contributed to his ultimate
downfall, and his many attributes, including a tenacity that drove
the Stones to the forefront of a musical rebellion. The two
conflicting sides of Brian's personality somehow melded together to
form a musician with unique talent, whose musical "flavorings"
helped the Stones stand out from their contemporaries; from the
sitar on "Paint It Black to the dulcimer on "Lady Jane".

The Rolling Stones were formed in the early 60s when Brian came
together with childhood friends Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. In
the early years, the three held each other in admiration and even
lived together in squalor in a small London apartment without heat
during one of the roughest winters on record in the UK. Brian had a
hard time holding onto steady work and he and Keith would spend
hours practicing guitar riffs in their freezing apartment. The trio
would often share a bed to keep warm at night, a story that
eventually led to rumors that Mick and Brian had a sexual
relationship. Mick, Keith and Brian were the glue that held the
Stones together until they crossed paths with Andrew Oldham, who
became their manager and marketer. His business savvy impressed
the group and they trusted his input, which eventually included
elevating Mick and Keith to the post of songwriting team (an
unofficial 'poster boys'). Though not able to break into the
"Glitter Twins" writing monopoly, Brian was able contribute
enduring musical masterpieces, with instruments ignored in
contemporary music up until that time. Truly gifted, Brian was able
to pick up just about any instrument and learn how to play it in
just a few hours time. His brilliant sitar performance on "Paint It
Black" is heralded as one of his best. The song owes its "classic"
status to Brian's inspired performance. Regardless, Brian was
gradually removed as self-proclaimed 'leader' of the Stones. Only
those present can be certain of the dynamics at play, but the
accepted version is that Mick and Keith grew closer while writing,
as Brian became more and more alienated. His severe self-esteem
problem, something he was never able to conquer, apparently kept
him from offering input and further isolated him from the band. It
has been said that Brian actually wrote songs and had he been more
mentally stable, he might have been confident enough to present
them to the band. They are now rumored to be held by one of his
many ex-girlfriends. Some members of the Stones inner circle claim
that Brian, and not Keith Richards, actually crafted the famous
riff that launches the Stones classic "Satisfaction". The story
goes that Brian was playing the riff one day, and Keith heard it.
Later, Keith awoke in the middle of the night and began playing the
riff into a tape recorder, expanding on it to create the tune that
became legendary. The rumor of Brian's input has never been
corroborated. Ultimately, Brian's paranoid insistence that the
remainder of the Stones were "out to get him" kept him from
achieving his most coveted musical: to be recognized as a
songwriter.

By the mid-60s, Brian Jones had developed a serious dependence on
illegal drugs. Sadly, these mixed badly with his poor mental
health, leading to further isolation and paranoia. If Brian were
alive today, he would most likely be diagnosed as manic depressive
and placed on medication to control his extreme ups and downs. In
Brian's day, however, far less was known about such medical
conditions and Brian was left to cope with his growing stardom and
increasingly shrinking role in the Stones and unable to dig himself
out of the cycle of alternating megalomania and self-loathing.
Interestingly, Mick and Keith's much-publicized "drug orgy" at
Keith's home, Redlands, eclipsed Brian's own arrest and trial for
retaining a controlled substance. Even in drug use, Brian had
failed to measure up and he continued to feel defeated. As Brian
sunk deeper and deeper into a drug-induced stupor, it has been said
that his personality became unbearable. Many claim the drug use
made him nasty and violent and he was accused of beating more than
one of his ex-girlfriends, which eventually lead to the infamous
"Anita Pallenberg incident". Anita, a German model Brian met in
1966, has been called Brian's only 'true love'. In 1967, she
joined Brian and Keith, among others, on a trip to Morocco. Legend
has it Brian became irate with Anita and beat her to the point
where she fled to Keith, hysterical and begging for help. Keith
came to her rescue and the entire group left Morocco, leaving Brian
behind. Keith and Anita would eventually become lovers (legend has
it she also had onscreen intercourse with Mick while filming the
cult film "Performance") widening the gap between Brian and the
other Stones even further. By the time Brian returned to the UK on
his own, his relationship with the Stones was beyond repair.

It's clear, through stories from bandmates, ex-girlfriends and
friends, that Brian Jones could be an outright louse but he could
also be a trusted friend and confident musician. Sadly, by the time
the Stones recorded the infamous THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST in
1967, Brian was worlds apart from his former 'best buddies'. He
hated the album and repeatedly begged the other Stones not to
release it, claiming it blatantly ripped off the Beatles SGT.
PEPPERS album. Strangely enough, this is the first Stones album
that featured a track written by a Stone other than Mick or Keith,
Bill Wyman's "In Another Land". Upon release, Brian's opinion was
proven correct, as critics and fans dismissed the album as a pale
shadow of its Beatles counterpart. Over time, the album has been
given much more credit for its place in rock history. By the time
the Stones hit the studio to record the follow-up, 1968s BEGGARS
BANQUET, Brian was all but useless. Luckily, he was able to
contribute some fantastic slide guitar to "Salt of the Earth" and
lend some backup vocals to "Sympathy for the Devil". Sadly, Keith
was forced to pick up most of the slack on this album, and Brian's
dismissal from the Stones was all but imminent. Brian managed to
contribute mildly to LET IT BLEED, released in 1969, but his part
is barely worth a mention.

The Stones asked Brian to leave the group in June of 1969. The
split was reported in the press as mutual, and Brian retired to his
home, Cotchford Farm, formerly owned by A.A. Milne, writer of the
classic "Winnie the Pooh" books. Brian spent much time working on
music and 'detoxing' during this time. He reportedly discussed
collaborations with other musicians, including the members of
Credence Clearwater Revival and John Lennon. Sadly, on July 2,
1969, Brian Jones was found dead in his swimming pool, his passing
ruled "death by misadventure" a/k/a drowning. Interestingly,
neither Mick Jagger nor Keith Richards attended Brian's funeral,
though the Stones held a 'memorial concert' in Hyde Park days after
his death. Both Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman attended the service
in Brian's native Cheltenham, while rumors that Brian's death was
actually murder surfaced shortly thereafter. First, his girlfriend
at the time, Anna Wohlin, was whisked away never to be seen again.
Second, though Brian was an expert swimmer and there was a nurse at
his home the evening of his death, no one was able to save him.
Third, though Brian did have narcotics in his system at the time of
his death, they were not strong enough to have rendered him
helpless in his own pool. New theories have abounded in books by
Wohlin and Terry Rawlings, among others. The general consensus is
that Brian was killed by a live-in contractor, Frank Thorogood.
Published reports claim the two had a falling out, prompting
Thorogood to hold Brian's head under the water until he drowned.
Rawling's book claims, according to former Stones tour manager Tom
Keylock, Thorogood eventually confessed to the crime on his
deathbed. British producer Stephen Wooley is currently working on a
film centered mainly on Wohlin's book. STONED (scheduled for
release in early 2006) claims to finally 'solve' the mystery of
Brian's death. According to Wooley, Janet Lawson (the nurse at
Brian's home on the night he died) offered valuable information
that led to the ending of the film. The indie film may be hard to
find at local theaters but a DVD release is also planned. Whether
or not the film is a success, the music of the Stones will stand as
a testament to Brian's legacy. If you aren't familiar with the
early material, now is your chance to pick it up. It surely shaped
all Stones material to come, including their current work. If you
are interested in more on Brian's life, there are many books to

Is there any specific reason you want to learn to play lead guitar? Do you want to start a band and write and record your own music? Do you want to impress this girl you are thinking of asking out? Or maybe you want to see the expression on friends' faces when you pull a fancy lick on the guitar. Regardless of the reasons you may have, if you want to learn to play guitar you have to learn to do it right, and the tips you will learn here are going to point you in the right direction. But before that, let us take a look at what playing lead guitar is all about, and what a lead guitarist does.

Lead Guitar: An Introduction

Playing lead guitar, otherwise known as playing a guitar solo is the act of playing notes on a guitar, either one at a time or simultaneously, to produce a melodic guitar line that runs above the rhythm section of a song and the lead guitarist is the guitar player that plays this part. Playing lead guitar is not limited to just electric guitar playing, since a guitar solo can also be performed on acoustic guitar.

There are so many things to do and learn when it comes to playing lead guitar, but let me break it down to 3 things that you have to keep doing.

Keep On Learning

When it comes to learning lead guitar, there are two general areas you have to master but they go hand in hand. They are, your instrument and your ability to play it. First of all you have to understand how a guitar works, how it sounds, and what you need to do to get a variety of interesting sounds from this instrument. Then you have to be able to do just that, play it and get all those different sounds out of it.

You have to be able to look down at the guitar neck and see every possible scale, every possible pattern for every chord progression possible. while some scales can be a little tricky, one of the easiest to play are pentatonic scales which are common among blues and most rock songs because there are just 5 notes to play, hence "penta"-tonic.

So how do you master scales? If you do not know how they look, the best way would probably be to buy a book that contains the major and minor scales and learn the notes in the scales, learn how the scale would look at every part of the guitar neck.

Keep on Rehearsing

The only way for your to get better at playing, and to master guitar technique is through constant practice. Once you know how the scales look, you need to know how they actually sound. You need to learn how to play scales over the entire fret board, and in various keys and chords. One of the best ways to start is to learn guitar tablature.

While practicing, it is important for you to learn the correct hand positions since this will allow you to move through cords with ease, and less strain.

Getting an instructional video that comes with a book helps you learn the scales faster, with the book allowing you to learn the scale and see how it looks, and the video with a guitar instructor on it showing you how to do it. If you do not have time to go to a music store to buy a guitar lesson on DVD, there are many sites online that offer video guitar lessons.

Another way of mastering scales and how they can be put to use is to listen to other guitar players' solos. How are they using the scales? Learning their guitar solos gives you different ideas that will also greatly improve your playing. You should note what scales they use and how they play them.

Keep On Playing

No matter how good you get practicing at home, in your bedroom or basement; things are very different when you are playing for a crowd, and with people actually watching you. This makes a lot of newbie guitarists very uncomfortable, in fact so uncomfortable that they either freeze, forget guitar parts or simply just mess up.

The only way to develop your confidence and skill in playing lead guitar in front of an audience is to actually just keep on playing, keep on gigging. You will overcome your anxiety and will be able to play more relaxed and confident, allowing you to even play better.

Just remember, to really get good at playing lead guitar, keep learning and practicing so you develop your mastery of scales and technique, and keep playing and looking for gig opportunities that will help you overcome stage fright and develop your confidence a lead guitarist must have.

The Fender American Standard series of guitars features both Telecaster and Stratocasters, the legends of the Fender name. The most affordable guitars in the Fender line-up, the classic style has some new updates to please musicians everywhere. Refinements include changes to some, but not all models of the guitars allowing musicians to select the guitar that best suits their playing style. The American Series guitars typically have twenty-two frets rather than the previous twenty-one, some feature humbuckers, synchonized tremolo arm, a steel bridge plate for added sustain and the three-sadle bridge has been replaced by a six-sadle bridge. The new six-sadle bridge means that you can adjust the height and length of each string independently. Available in a wide variety of colors and finishes, these guitars live up to the Fender legacy.

The Beginning

The first major electric guitar designed and produced by Leo Fender, the Fender Telecaster was introduced in the 1940's. With solid body construction and electronic amplification this was the first guitar to allow musicians to use the instrument with a band or as a solo instrument in a larger forum. Instantly popular with musicians across the genres, the Telecaster was embraced by Blues, Country and later Rock n' Roll musicians. Fender is known for its treble tone and the Telecaster is particularly known for its bright and clear tones. The bridge pickup of the Telecaster is wound more than the pickup for the neck with emphasizes the treble tone and the slanted neck also gives a more treble sound while the lower tones are dampened. A versatile instrument musicians can use the controls for volume and tone to craft their own sound. For more than fifty years the Telecaster has been a favorite of both professional and amateur musicians.

The Next Step

The second big innovation from the workshop of Leo Fender was the Stratocaster. Designed in the early 1950's, the Stratocaster was the result of all that had been learned from making the Telecaster combined with feedback from musicians about what worked and what didn't and what they wanted. Overall, the Stratocaster is a more complicated instrument with three single coil pickups which increases the tone and overall sound of the guitar. The addition of the Fender vibrato bridge allowed musicians to bend the strings to achieve a sound similar to the popular pedal-steel instruments. The already wide variety of tones that were created by the Stratocaster were expanded with the creation of the synchronized tremoloarm. A tremolo arm allows a guitar player to quickly vary the tension of the strings which temporarily changes the pitch to create vibrato, portamento and pitch effect expanding the options available for the musician. There were changes made to the overall design of the guitar body as well. Beveled areas for where the strumming arm rests and for the player's chest were added for a fitted feel that is comfortable for long session.

Creating the Fender Sound

The electric guitar was brought to life with the invention of the single coil pickup. A single coil pickup is created by wrapping a permanent magnet with fine enameled copper and then mounting the coil on the body of the guitar. When the player then plucks the strings, they vibrate and effect the magnetic flux which changes the voltage that passes through the coild of wire. The signal is modified by these changes in voltage and travels through the wire to the amplifier or recording device. The sound can then be amplified to be heard at any volume, from your garage to a stadium concert.

In its traditional form, the Telecaster guitar features just two single coil pickups but the three-way selector switch provides flexibility in choosing which pickup to use and further controls for tone and volume shape the sound. In the Stratocaster there are three standard single coil pickups mounted in series for the bridge middle and neck. With a switch of a lever the player can select which pickup they want to be active. Theey can use two pickups in combination, a single or all three to produce the sound that they want.

Further Innovation

First introduced in the 1950's, a humbucker is popular among many musicians for its ability to clarify sound. Electronic guitars rely on single coil magnetic pickups to 'pick up' and convey the alternated voltage created by the vibrating strings to create music. But these magnets can act as antennae and are vulnerable to picking up other signals not intended by the musician. The single coil magnetic pickups are sensitive to electromagnetic interference that can be generated by electrical appliances, computer screens, motors and other signals as well, all of which create a 'hum' or 'buzz' in the sound produced by the guitar. A humbucker uses two additional coils (although there are several versions of the humbucker) to cancel the interference, which literally bucks the hum and leaves only the pure musical sound to be amplified. In the American Series there are several Stratocasters that have humbuckers in their designs.

The Little Things

The sound of each guitar is unique and can be personized and shaped by several factors. Where the pickups are positioned, the number of coils wound around each magnet, what type of wire is used, the shape of the guitar, the kind of wood used in the neck and body and the position of the strings all have an impact on the sound. Using the tone controls to determine which pickups are featured gives musicians control over their sound. Pickups in the bridge position bring a bright, harmonic-rich and sharp tone compared to those pickups in the neck position which are louder, more warm and mellow in nature.

Interested in improving your guitar playing skills? To be a better guitar player, you need to have stronger, more flexible fingers. Strength and flexibility will come with time as you practice playing, but you can increase how fast you improve by exercising your fingers away from the guitar. These exercises can be done anytime you're sitting still, whether in class or waiting in the doctor's office.

To improve your ability to play the guitar, you need to increase your fingers' flexibility. To do so, you can try stretching your fingers everyday. Bend them to the point of tension, but don't cause yourself pain! If you injure yourself, you can actually slow down your learning curve.

Also, you need to increase your hand strength. Doing so will help you hold the chords firmly, strum the strings louder, and increase your endurance. To exercise your fingers, you can try increasing your grip strength. Try squeezing a grip trainer or a tennis ball. Also, just lifting weights in general will improve your grip strength.

Finally, you need to increase your speed and finger independence. If you can train each finger to operate independently, you will have a much easier time changing chords and fingerpicking. To do so, try placing your hand flat on a table or flat surface. Raise your palms so your hands rest on their fingertips. Now try lifting and lowering each finger one at a time. Practice different patterns of doing so, and try to increase your speed ever time.

All three of these exercises will help you improve your guitar playing skills.

I have been studying ultimate guitar tab for over 15 years. Ultimate guitar tab changed my life and allowed me to play music without the knowledge of how to read music. I actually did know how to read music, but ultimate guitar tab was much easier. Using ultimate guitar tab, anyone can play the guitar, there is nothing hard about it, put your finger behind the fret of the proper line and you will get the desired sound. Of course, ultimate guitar tab is a little more complicated that this, but basically, it is that simple.

While many guitarist pride themselves on 'not knowing how to read music', it would be foolish for any person studying guitar, the amazing tool of ultimate guitar tab. There are a few basic symbols for reading ultimate guitar tab, but it is so easy I have taught 5 year old kids to play the guitar using ultimate guitar tab.

Are you read to learn how to read ultimate guitar tab?

Guitar tab is comprised of 6 lines, the lowest line is the top string on the guitar and the highest line is the bottom string in guitar, reverse if you want to think about ultimate guitar tab like that. If you wonder why it is reverse...it is because the lines actually reflect the pitch of the instrument, the lowest line has a lower sound and the higher lines have a higher sound. Pretty cool, eh?

So here is a basic diagram based on the strings on the guitar, remember, opposite, or reverse order.

E----FIRST STRING (STRING FARTHEST AWAY FROM YOU)
B---- SECOND STRING (SECOND STRING FROM THE BOTTOM)
G----THIRD STRING (THIRD STRING FROM THE BOTTOM)

The one aspect that ultimate guitar tab is missing compared to proper musical notation, is it's inability to communicate timing. My suggestion is to use tab only as a guide to the right notes, listen carefully to the music that comes out of the speaker to understand the timing of the playing. So this may mean to play an even strum with all the notes the same length because they are the same distance apart and grouped together.

You pick the first note and hammer on the second note. Which would mean play the open E twice, then hold the 6th fret and hammer on the 7th fret with your 2nd finger, picking only 1 time, the first note, for the sound of both notes. A hammer on. Pull offs look the same, but with the opposite, you pick the first note and pull off the second note :

Bends are when you pick the first note and bend that note up to the sound of the next note, so in the following example, you would listen to the sound of the second note, the 7th fret on the 2nd string from the bottom, then move your hand back to the 5th fret and pick the string, then bend it and hold it to the sound of that note 2 frets higher.

It takes years to get good at bending, there are many different styles of bending in ultimate guitar tab. A quick bend, a slow bend, it is best to listen to your guitar hero's bend and try to make it sound like them.

'r' means return, so you would bend the 7th fret up to sound like the 9th, then 'return', bring it back down to the 7th frets pitch.

Slides are used to pick the first note, then keep pressing down and move your finger to the next note. You can slide both up and down in ultimate guitar tab, each has its own symbol. You may see 's' instead of them, but then use your own common sense and ultimate guitar tab wisdom.

I know that some folks reading this article are already outraged. The thought that I could choose the ten best rock guitar solos is absolutely preposterous! Well I agree, but obviously, I also disagree because I am writing this article. Making a list of the best guitar solos is such a subjective undertaking. Everyone has their own opinions about what makes a guitar solo good or bad and everyone has slightly different tastes. Some people reading this article will think I'm great and others will undoubtedly wonder whether I have ever listened to rock guitar.

So, what makes one guitar solo better than another one? Is it the melodic content of the solo? Is it the technical difficulty of the solo? Well, if you have come to this article in search of an answer to this question, I am sad to have to tell you that I do not have one. However, like everyone else, I do have my own opinions and tastes and this is what this list has been generated from.

I do believe that lists like this have use. Many guitarists search online for lists like this, and I am not just talking about beginners. Experienced guitarists seek out lists like this even if only just to criticize them. I think that the ultimate purpose of these lists is to help spread the word about great guitarists and great solos that may have gone unheard of had it not been for the list.

One thing can be said about the developmental criteria of this list. The title is "best rock guitar solos." I have tried to choose solos which demonstrate the possibilities of ROCK guitar. I have included commentary on some of them. One last thing, please don't email me about which guitarists I have forgotten. I understand that you have your favorites. Just post a comment and let us all know.

Now, without further ado... The 10 Best Rock Guitar Solos:

1. Stairway to Heaven - Jimmy Page (Does anything even need to be said?)

2. All Along the Watchtower - Jimmy Hendrix (Jimmy Hendrix took an acoustic song and made it a rock masterpiece. Because of this solo, many people consider this to be Jimmy's song.)

3. Bohemian Rhapsody - Brian May (A great compliment to Freddie Mercury's flamboyance.)

4. Freebird - Gary Rossington/Alan Collins

5. Let it Be - George Harrison (Like David Gilmour, George Harrison was a master of using just enough notes to get his point across. He always seemed to know how to compliment the Beatles' music. He is one of the most underrated guitarists out there.)

At some point, however, you will want to make a decision as to whether you are going to play chords just for the fun of it, or play chords like your favourite guitar players. In order to play chords like your favourite guitar heroes, you will need to learn how to play your guitar chords like a pro.

Let's take a look at four techniques that will help you master and learn guitar chords like a pro.

1. Pro attitude: Learning to play your chords like a pro requires a willingness to go above and beyond the average musician. This does not mean that you stop having fun playing on the guitar. Playing like a pro means that you have a pro-attitude towards playing your instrument that includes having fun, mixed with a desire to learn the best ways to play and grow on the guitar.

2. Learn proper left hand guitar technique: Excellent left and guitar technique is key in producing crisp and clear sounding chords. If your left fingers are positioned incorrectly on your six string instrument, you can end up with a terrible sounding chord. You will also want to make sure that you are pressing down on your guitar strings with the correct amount of pressure. Press down to lightly and you will not be able to hear the guitar strings when plucked. Press down too hard, and you will be exerting finger strength that should be reserved for long-term live playing.

3. Learn proper right hand guitar technique: Pursue learning excellent right hand guitar technique. Before strumming any guitar chord, make sure that you are holding your guitar pick properly. Another area that can actually cause potential long-term injury to your right hand is strumming incorrectly. When strumming your guitar, make sure that your right hand when holding your guitar pick is not rigid and stiff. Proper strumming technique for playing basic guitar chords is kind of like holding a spoon and bringing it upwards towards you, and then away from you, in a circular motion. If you are playing your guitar chords in a stiff and rigid up-and-down motion, be warned, this can cause injury to your wrist down the road.

4. Practice your chords: It goes without question that you need to practice your guitar chords. One of the items you'll want to practice when learning your guitar chords is the ability to play your guitar chords without looking at the neck of your guitar. This will only happen by memorizing your left hand fingering placement, and making a conscious choice to not always look at your guitar strings.

1. First and foremost get to know your instrument. Find out how each part works, such as what the resonator and sounding board does, why an acoustic guitar has a hole in it and an electric guitar is solid. Find out how to tension the strings properly, and tune the guitar correctly. In fact a good tip is purchase a set of pitch pipes to tune your guitar with, and learn how to tune one string and then the rest of them from that. That will teach you a lot about how each string relates to the other.

2. Reading music. Some guitarists feel that they must learn how to read music, but it's not essential. Many of the world's greatest guitarists never learned how to read music, which is one reason that tablature, or tab, was devised. This shows you what fret and string you should be on, and what string to pick. Learn tab and you should be all set to learn any guitar piece.

3. Learn a few of the major chords. You will find a whole load of free guitar chord learning books online, but if you want to learn quickly then buy a book that comes with a DVD or CD that lets you hear what the chord should sound like. In fact these books will let you hear what each whole lesson should sound like, and even gives you pieces to play along to. Don't just learn how to play the chords at the top of the neck, but learn all of their positions. There are ten different ways to play some chords all over the fret, so learn them all, and this will also teach you a lot about how the various strings and fret positions relate to one another. Once you know the majors, start on the others.

4. When learning chords it is important to practice a lot. Set aside an hour a day for chord practice, and play along to some tunes. Try singing as you play and have fun while doing it. Through time your fingers will develop a chord memory, and you will be playing them without thinking. If you have a buddy that is also learning, get together once a week or so and jam together. Make it fun.

5. Speaking of memory, your fingers and hands will also develop a muscle memory through practice, and it is always a good idea to strengthen up your hand and finger muscles. A grip strengthener is a good idea, and don't get worried if your fingertips start to hurt. That's normal when you start learning guitar. In fact no list of tips for learning guitar would be complete without some advice on this. Good guitar players have a lump of callus on each of their fingertips, and until you develop that you will feel pain while playing, but you have to play through it until your calluses develop. You can help it along with some rubbing alcohol.

6. Don't give up. You are going to find some finger positions difficult and painful, but don't give up. Keep at it and eventually it will become second nature. The same is true of some barre chords - these can be the most difficult to play, but keep practicing. Do you think Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton gave up when trying to perfect these fantastic riffs and finger licks? Of course not, so don't you. However, the more groundwork you have done in learning what you guitar is, and how the strings and frets work, the easier you will find the flamboyant stuff.

7. This is not an essential tip, but try more than one style of guitar. Try playing bass, electric or Spanish, and you will find that the more you learn with these, the better you will play guitar in general. Learning guitar is more than just knowing how to play YOUR guitar, but about how to play ANY guitar. Try rhythm and lead, and learn how to play both chords and riffs. Who knows, you might find that you are suited to an entirely different way of playing than you have been practicing, but you will never find out if you don't try it.

8. The final tip is practice. Practice, practice and then practice some more. A great deal of what you see the great guitar players do is born from practice, and is played using finger and muscle memory. They are not concentrating on what they are doing next, they simply relax and the result of their hours of practice flow out of their hands into the strings. You will be no different.

These are eight good tips for learning guitar effectively, and if you follow every one of them, there is no reason on earth why you should not be a great player. Perhaps it is true that great guitar players are born, but it is also true that every one of them practiced every spare minute they had.

1st Position Pentatonic Scale

Pentatonic scales are widely used in rock, jazz, blues and
country music. Let's start with the 1st position pentatonic
scale. Pentatonic scales are five note scales that are fairly
easy to play and are an excellent introduction into the world of
scales. Pentatonic scales are generally heard as one of two
modes: major and minor.

Most guitarist's learn to play basic chord shapes in the 1st
position so naturally we should learn this important scale
in the same position. Pentatonic scale patterns are also a
useful tool for learning the fretboard in all keys. When we learn
the 1st position pentatonic scale pattern we will in fact be
learning both the major and minor pentatonic scale.

Let's play the F minor pentatonic scale in the first position:

Start by playing the sixth string, 1st fret with your first
finger, this is the note F.

Next play the sixth string, 4th fret with your fourth finger,
this is the note Ab.

Now play the fifth string, 1st fret with your first finger, this
is the note Bb.

Next play the fifth string, 3rd fret with your third finger, this
is the note C.

Finally, play the fourth string, 1st fret with your first finger,
this is the note Eb.

So, there you have it, your 1st position pentatonic scale the F
minor pentatonic scale.

Remember it's a five note scale.(penta = five)

F minor pentatonic scale = F - Ab - Bb - C - Eb

When you play the F minor pentatonic scale in the first position
you will hear that if we only use the notes F, Ab, Bb, C and Eb
the scale will sound unfinished so we can complete our scale by
finishing on the note F one octave higher than our original F
note.

Here's our updated F minor pentatonic scale in the 1st position:

Start by playing the sixth string, 1st fret with your first
finger, this is the note F.

Next play the sixth string, 4th fret with your fourth finger,
this is the note Ab.

Now play the fifth string, 1st fret with your first finger, this
is the note Bb.

Next play the fifth string, 3rd fret with your third finger, this
is the note C.

Now, play the fourth string, 1st fret with your first finger,
this is the note Eb.

Finally, finish on the fourth string, 3rd fret with your 3rd
finger this is the note F (one octave higher than our original
note F that was played on the sixth string 1st fret).

You will hear this is a more complete sounding version of the F
minor pentatonic scale, it's still a five note scale , even
though we're playing six notes there is only five different notes
being played as the first and last notes both share the same
letter name F.

Now let's play the same F minor pentatonic scale one octave
higher while still playing in the first position.

Start on the fourth string, 3rd fret with your 3rd finger this is
the note F.

Next play the third string, 1st fret with your first finger, this
is the note Ab.

Now play the third string, 3rd fret with your third finger, this
is the note Bb.

Next play the second string, 1st fret with your first finger,
this is the note C.

Now, play the second string, 4th fret with your fourth finger,
this is the note Eb.

Finally, finish on the first string, 1st fret with your first
finger this is the note F (one octave higher than the
F note played on the fourth string 3rd fret).

By playing the Minor Pentatonic Scale so frequently, our fret
hand develops a motor skill memory for the characteristic 2-note-
per-string pattern of these scales.

Pentatonic scales are among the most important scales in modern
guitar music apart from the fact that pentatonic scales are
simpler and generally easier to play than diatonic scales, the
pentatonic pattern you have just learnt can be used for both the
minor pentatonic and major pentatonic scales, simply by starting
on a different note.

Compare the notes of the Ab major pentatonic scale.

Ab - Bb - C - Eb - F

to the notes of the F minor pentatonic scale

F - Ab - Bb - C - Eb

Can you see they are exactly the same notes in a different
sequence?

Let's play the 1st position pentatonic scale in the first
position this time as an Ab major pentatonic scale.

Start with the sixth string, 4th fret with your fourth finger,
this is the note Ab.

Now play the fifth string, 1st fret with your first finger, this
is the note Bb.

Next play the fifth string, 3rd fret with your third finger, this
is the note C.

Now, play the fourth string, 1st fret with your first finger,
this is the note Eb.

Next play the fourth string, 3rd fret with your third finger,
this is the note F.

Finally, finish on the third string, 1st fret with your 1st
finger this is the note Ab (one octave higher than our original
note Ab that was played on the sixth string 4th fret).

You can extend the range of your Ab major pentatonic scale in the
same way we did with the F minor pentatonic scale.

Start on the third string, 1st fret with your first finger, this
is the note Ab (the same note we finished the previous Ab major
pentatonic scale on).

Now play the third string, 3rd fret with your third finger, this
is the note Bb.

Next play the second string, 1st fret with your first finger,
this is the note C.

Now, play the second string, 4th fret with your fourth finger,
this is the note Eb.

Next play the first string 1st fret with your first finger, this
is the note F.

Finally, finish on the first string 4th fret with your fourth
finger this is the note Ab (one octave higher than the1st Position Pentatonic Scale
Ab note played on the third string 1st fret).

By learning the 1st position pentatonic scale pattern you will
